What's important for this trip?

We analysed scenarios, claims and complaints to identify the frequency and severity of risks. These are the key considerations when buying insurance for this type of trip.

  1. 01

    Business travel permitted

Look for a policy that covers a business trip

The first thing to check for a work trip is that the policy covers business travel at all. Many leisure policies define a trip as a holiday and exclude business, or only cover it under a paid business add-on. Non-manual business, meetings, conferences and laptop work, is covered by most but not all, so this is the gate the trip has to pass before anything else counts.

  2. 02

    Enough tech cover

Look for a laptop and phone covered as standard

The defining need of a work trip is the laptop and phone you travel with. Standard baggage cover often caps a single item well below the value of a business laptop, so check the single-item limit or whether there is dedicated cover for business equipment. Only some policies cover business equipment specifically.

  3. 03

    Medical & repatriation

    Look for £5m or more

Away on business the medical exposure is the same as any traveller: a sudden illness or injury, private treatment abroad and, in the worst case, repatriation home. A solo traveller has no companion to help arrange it, so a high medical limit with a 24-hour assistance line and repatriation as standard matters.

  4. 04

    Travel delay & abandonment

Look for travel delay & abandonment included as standard

Business trips run to a schedule, so a delayed or cancelled flight can cost a missed meeting as well as money. Travel delay pays for each period you are held up, and abandonment covers calling the trip off if the outbound flight is cancelled with no reasonable alternative.

  5. 05

    Missed departure & connection

Look for missed-departure and connection cover

If you are held up reaching the airport, missed departure cover pays for the extra travel to catch up and reach the meeting. It matters more on a short business trip where the schedule is fixed.

  6. 06

    Baggage & personal belongings

Look for baggage included as standard

Beyond the tech, you still travel with clothes and a bag. Check baggage is included as standard rather than a paid extra, and look at the single-item and valuables limits that cap any one item.

  7. 07

    Cancellation & curtailment

    Look for broad cancellation reasons

Cancellation and curtailment pay non-refundable costs if you cancel or cut the trip short, but the trigger matters more than the limit for a business traveller. Cancelling because work changes or pulls the trip is generally not an insured reason; cover responds to illness, injury and a defined list of events. On a 2-3 night trip the prepaid cost is low, so even modest limits usually suffice.

  8. 08

    Personal liability

    Look for £2m or more

Personal liability covers legal costs and compensation if you accidentally injure someone or damage property while away. Liability arising from your work or profession is excluded across the market, so this covers you as a traveller rather than for business acts.

  9. 09

    Cancellation

Look for cancellation included as standard

Cancellation cover is standard on almost every policy and pays back prepaid costs if you cannot travel. On a short business trip the prepaid cost is usually low and often reclaimable through work, so this is a lower priority than covering the trip while you are on it.
