What's important for this trip?

We analysed scenarios, claims and complaints to identify the frequency and severity of risks. These are the key considerations when buying insurance for this type of trip.

  1. 01

    Medical, GHIC & repatriation

    Look for £5m or more

Italy is in the EU, so a GHIC covers state treatment. It will not pay for a private clinic or repatriation home, which is the large cost if one of you cannot fly back. For a short couple's break the day-to-day medical risk is lower than a family trip, but the repatriation exposure is the same, so a solid limit with repatriation as standard still matters.

  2. 02

    Cancellation & curtailment (per person)

Look for around £500 or more

Cancellation is quoted per insured person, so each of you needs a limit covering your share of the flights and two nights' hotel. The prepaid cost of a weekend is low, so a very high limit is not needed, but if one of you falls ill before departure both halves of the booking are at stake.

  3. 03

    Personal liability

    Look for £2m or more

Personal liability covers legal costs and compensation if you accidentally injure someone or damage property. It is rarely used but potentially very costly, so the limit should be high. Claims between travelling companions and motor-vehicle incidents are excluded.

  4. 04

    Flight delay

Look for flight delay included as standard

A two-night trip is short, so a delayed flight eats a meaningful share of it. Travel delay cover pays a set amount for each period you are held up. It is a small benefit, so what counts is that it is included as standard.

  5. 05

Missed departure (getting to the airport)

Look for missed departure included as standard

If you are held up reaching the airport, missed departure cover pays for the extra travel to catch up. On a tight weekend, missing the outbound flight can cost most of the trip.

  6. 06

    GHIC excess waiver (EU/Italy)

Look for the medical excess waived when a GHIC is used

Italy is in the EU, so using a GHIC often reduces the cost of treatment. Some policies then waive the medical excess entirely, so a claim costs nothing out of pocket. It only applies where a GHIC is valid, which it is for this trip.

  7. 07

    Theft of belongings (pickpocketing)

Look for theft of belongings included as standard

Rome has a high level of pickpocketing around stations, public transport and tourist sites, so theft of a bag, phone or wallet is the most likely claim on this trip. Baggage cover pays for stolen belongings, but check the single-item and valuables limits and the conditions, such as items not being left unattended.

  8. 08

    Cash & passport theft

Look for cash & passport theft included as standard

Pickpocketing often means losing cash and documents. Personal money cover pays back stolen cash up to a limit, and passport cover helps with the cost of an emergency replacement and getting home. Both are more relevant on a city break than on a resort holiday.
