What's important for this trip?

We analysed scenarios, claims and complaints to identify the frequency and severity of risks. These are the key considerations when buying insurance for this type of trip.

  1. 01

    Medical, GHIC & repatriation

    Look for £5m or more

Spain is in the EU, so a GHIC gives access to state healthcare on the same terms as a resident. It will not pay for a private clinic or, more importantly, the cost of getting someone home if they cannot travel back as planned. On a family beach holiday the common medical claims are children's illness and injury, so a high limit with repatriation as standard is the core of the policy.

  2. 02

    Cancellation & curtailment (per person)

Look for around £1,000 or more

Cancellation limits are quoted per insured person, so each traveller's limit needs to cover their share of the flights, accommodation and any pre-booked excursions. With two children in the party, a child falling ill before departure is the most likely reason a family cancels, and curtailment covers coming home early. Make sure the cover is there for all four rather than shared across a single pot.

  3. 03

    Wildfire & extreme-heat

Look for wildfire & extreme-heat included as standard

The Spanish costas see wildfires and severe heatwaves in high summer, which can force an evacuation or close a resort. Catastrophe cover pays for extra accommodation, alternative travel or cutting the trip short when a natural event disrupts the holiday. Check it is included as standard, since some policies only offer it as a paid extension or not at all.

  4. 04

    Personal liability

    Look for £2m or more

Personal liability covers legal costs and compensation if you or a child accidentally injure someone or damage property, for example at the pool or the resort. It is rarely used but potentially very expensive, so the limit should be high. Claims between your own family and anything involving a motor vehicle are excluded across the market.

  5. 05

    Travel delay & abandonment

Look for travel delay & abandonment included as standard

Summer is peak season for flight delays to Spain, the single busiest UK holiday route. Travel delay cover pays a set amount for each period you are held up, and abandonment lets you claim the trip back if the outbound flight is cancelled with no reasonable alternative. On a fixed one-week holiday, disruption at the start eats into the time you have.

  6. 06

    GHIC excess waiver (EU/Spain)

Look for the medical excess waived when a GHIC is used

Spain is in the EU, so using a GHIC often reduces the cost of any treatment. Some policies reward that by waiving the medical excess entirely when a GHIC has been used, so a family claim costs nothing out of pocket rather than an excess for each person. It only applies where a GHIC is valid, which it is for this trip.

  7. 07

Private treatment where no public bed

Look for private treatment paid when public bed is available

On the Spanish costas an ambulance often takes you to a private clinic rather than a state hospital, and this is one of the most common Spanish claims disputes. Some policies only pay for private treatment where no suitable public or state bed is available, or reserve the right to move you to a public hospital, which can leave a gap or a delay. Check whether private treatment is paid without a public-bed precondition, since a GHIC covers the state route but not the private clinic you may actually be taken to.

  8. 08

Cancellation triggers (close relative & companions)

Look for cancellation triggers included as standard

Cancellation cover is only as good as the reasons that trigger it. The 'close relative' definition varies: some policies include aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins, others limit it to immediate family, so a claim for a wider relative can fall outside the list. Check too that a travelling companion cancelling is covered. A common decline reason across the market is a pre-existing condition of a non-travelling relative, so read that limit before relying on the cover.

  9. 09

    Children's personal-accident cover

Look for children's personal-accident cover included as standard

A family policy covers everyone on one contract, but a child's cover is not always the same as an adult's. Personal-accident cover in particular is usually cut for under-18s, and a couple of policies give young children no personal-accident cover at all. The limits that matter most day to day, medical, cancellation and baggage, are quoted per person so each child has their own; the exception is personal liability, which some policies share across the whole family as a single limit.

  10. 10

    Alcohol exclusion (fair wording)

Look for fairly worded alcohol exclusion

Every policy excludes claims where alcohol was a contributing factor, but the wording varies. Some apply a fair, evidence-based test, others exclude anything after a loosely defined level of drinking. On a beach holiday where the family has a drink by the pool or at dinner, a broad alcohol exclusion can quietly remove cover for a large share of the accidents that actually happen, so the fairness of the wording matters as much as the headline limits.
