How Prompted chat generates a travel insurance quote

How Prompted chat works

Chat with Prompted turns a plain description of your trip into live travel insurance quotes, compared against over 100 policies. You can use it on prompted.insure or through the Prompted ChatGPT plugin.

Here is what happens from your first message to generating a quote for travel insurance:

  1. You describe your trip. Type it as you would to a friend: "Two of us going to Japan for three weeks in March." No forms to fill in.
  2. Prompted resolves the five details every insurer needs. From what you have written, it works out your destination, trip duration, who is travelling (the group), each traveller's date of birth and your departure date. If anything is missing or unclear, it asks.
  3. Prompted generates live quotes. Your details are run against over 100 policies and the matching quotes come back in the chat, with cover levels and prices side by side.
  4. You choose, and the insurer completes the sale. Prompted does not sell policies itself. When you are ready, it takes you to the website of our Partner Aequotech who ensure all medical details and covers declarations are captured, and then refers you on to the insurer's own checkout, where you confirm your details and pay.

Prompted does not select a policy for you: that choice stays with you, and the policy is bought from and held with the insurer.

Buying a policy

Can I buy a travel insurance policy now?

Yes, as soon as you are happy with a quote. Buying happens on the insurer's website, not in the chat. Prompted finds and compares the policies; the insurer sells them. Quotes are live, so the price you see is the price you will be offered at checkout, provided your details are unchanged.

Where do I purchase the policy you've shown me?

On the insurer's own site. Every quote in Prompted chat comes with a link that carries your trip details through to that insurer's checkout, so you will not have to re-enter them. You pay the insurer directly and your contract is with them.

Can you take me to the insurer's checkout page?

Yes. Ask for the link to the policy you want, or select it from the comparison, and Prompted will direct you to the insurer's checkout. Before payment you will have to confirm any medical conditions and answer relevant declarations.

Changing or cancelling after purchase

Once you have bought a policy, any change to it is made with the insurer, not through Prompted. Prompted helps you find and compare cover before you buy; after that, the insurer holds your policy and is the only party able to amend it. Their contact details are on your policy schedule and in the confirmation email.

Can I change my travel dates after purchasing?

Usually, yes, but only by contacting the insurer. Most insurers will move the dates of a single trip policy before the trip starts, provided no claim has been made. There may be an administration fee, and if the new dates make the trip longer or move it into a different season the premium may change. Changes once a trip has started are harder to make and sometimes not possible, so get in touch before you leave.

Can I extend my insurance if I stay abroad longer?

Ask the insurer before your original cover ends. Many policies allow an extension if you request it while you are still covered and have not made a claim; some also extend automatically for a short period if you are delayed by something outside your control, such as a cancelled flight or being too ill to travel. The wording sets out the conditions and any limit on how far you can extend. Prompted cannot extend a policy for you.

Can I cancel my insurance and get a refund?

Often, but it depends on the policy.

The legal right to cancel within 14 days does not apply to travel insurance lasting less than a month, which covers most single-trip policies. Many insurers still offer a 14-day cooling-off period voluntarily, and will refund the premium if you have not travelled and have not made a claim. Check the policy wording or IPID for the insurer's cancellation terms before you buy. After any cooling-off period, refunds are at the insurer's discretion and are often not given, because cancellation cover has already been in force. Contact the insurer directly to cancel; Prompted cannot cancel a policy for you.

Documents and what to check before paying

How do I receive my policy documents?

From the insurer, by email, as soon as your payment goes through. You should receive a policy schedule (your details, dates, cover level and any endorsements), the full Policy Wording and the Insurance Product Information Document (IPID). Many insurers also offer an online account where you can download them again. Prompted does not hold your policy documents, so keep a copy somewhere you can reach it while away, such as your phone or email. If the documents do not arrive within a few minutes, check your spam folder and then contact the insurer.

What should I check before paying for travel insurance?

Take a minute on the insurer's checkout page to confirm the following. Prompted will have matched the policy to a trip like yours, but the insurer relies on what you enter at checkout.

  • Your names, dates of birth, destination and dates are correct and match what Prompted used to quote.
  • Your departure date is the day you leave home, and the policy ends on or after the day you get back.
  • Everyone travelling is named on the policy, with the right ages.
  • Any pre-existing medical conditions have been declared, for every traveller. Undeclared conditions are the most common reason claims are refused.
  • The cover level matches what you paid for the trip: cancellation and curtailment limits should be at least the total cost of flights, accommodation and anything else you would lose.
  • Any activities you plan (skiing, cruising, hiking above a set altitude, hiring a scooter) are covered, or added as an option.
  • The excess is one you are comfortable paying on a claim.
  • The cooling-off period and how to contact the insurer are set out in the documents.

If something looks wrong, go back to Prompted chat, correct the detail and get a fresh quote rather than changing it after purchase.

Notes on this guide

This guide explains how Prompted chat works and gives general guidance on buying and changing travel insurance, based on representative UK travel policy terms from leading insurers. The points on cover start dates, changes, extensions and cancellation summarise common terms drawn from a detailed expert review of UK travel insurance policies (August 2026); individual policies differ, so always read your Policy Wording and IPID before you buy. Prompted identifies what a trip like yours needs and compares over 100 policies; it does not sell or administer policies, and any change after purchase must be made with the insurer. This is information only, not financial or legal advice. If you have a dispute with your insurer, contact them first and then the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Prompted is a trading name of Prompted Limited, an Appointed Representative of Innovative Risk Labs Limited (FCA FRN 609155).
